Recology is Key Partner in Astoria Landfill Redevelopment Project – Wins Outstanding Project Award
What is now the Astoria Athletic Complex in Clatsop County, Oregon was once an operating landfill. Although the landfill reached capacity in 1985, it was unable to officially close for 30 years due to financial reasons. In 2014, a team of community partners, including Recology, were able to offer assistance to close the landfill and redevelop the space for future use. The redevelopment of this land allowed nearby Columbia Memorial Hospital and Recology Western Oregon to expand their much needed operations, and also provided the school district with a new sports complex.
This project has won a 2016 Oregon Brownfields Outstanding Project Award, which will be presented to the team at the 11th Annual Oregon Brownfields Conference on May 16th., 2016. The Oregon Brownfields Outstanding Project Award is awarded to “individuals and groups that have implemented innovative, yet practical, remediation projects that stimulated economic development through job creation or retention, or addressed a critical community development need.”
