2016 Lifetime Achievement in Community Building Award
Michael J. Sangiacomo is a ground breaker and trailblazer in community building. Throughout his career, Mike has worked tirelessly to improve communities through environmental education, volunteerism, and in support of innovative art and cultural programming.
Mike has changed lives, opened minds and transformed the community by generously giving his time and resources. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Recology Inc., Mike has led in the industry, incorporating sustainability with community building through institutionalizing multilingual education, art from recycling, instilling values of volunteerism and community partnerships within the fabric of company operations. Mike has been honored as the city’s “sustainability leader” by the San Francisco Business Times. In addition, he currently serves as the President of the Board of Trustees for the California Historical Society and serves as a member of the University of San Francisco School of Business and Management Advisory Council. He is a former Board Member and Chair of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Mike’s community building efforts have included board service with the San Francisco 49ers Foundation, San Francisco AIDS Foundation as Finance Committee Chair, South Bayshore Community Development Corporation, and the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee.
The Chinese Culture Center
The Chinese Culture Center is a nonprofit arts organization based in the community. We elevate Chinatown and all underserved communities, and give voice to equality through process driven contemporary art and education. CCC is one of the most prominent and impactful institutions in contemporary art, a leader in the City. 168,000 members of the community actively engage with CCC annually, of whom 5,000 are youth.
