Kitchen pail delivery has begun!

Attention Recology San Mateo County customers – kitchen pail delivery has begun!

Residents can use their kitchen pails to collect food scraps for the Compost program starting the week of January 3, 2011. Remember, the pail is for in-home use only, empty the contents into the large green Compost cart. Look for important information inside the pail. Pail delivery will continue through December 22.

Composting is a highly effective way to help protect the environment, and Recology San Mateo County is proud to offer a home composting collection service to its customers.

More than six million tons of food products are dumped in California every year! In fact, food is the largest single source of waste in California, making up 15.5 percent of the waste stream.

That waste decomposes and creates methane gas, which is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide and is directly attributed to climate change. Composting is nature’s way of recycling organic waste into a new soil amendment rich in nutrients that can be used for organic farming, vineyards and highway erosion and control projects.

Beginning January 2011, in addition to your yard trimmings you can compost:

Food Scraps –  

  • Bread, grains and pasta
  • Coffee grounds (and filters)
  • Dairy, Eggshells, Fish and shellfish
  • Fruit ( including pits)
  • Meat, including bones
  • Poultry and Vegetables


Soiled Paper Products  –

  • Coffee filters
  • Greasy pizza boxes
  • Paper cups (including chain store coffee cups) and plates
  • Paper ice cream containers
  • Paper bags, napkins and towels
  • Paper take-out boxes and containers
  • Paper tea bags
  • Waxy paper milk and juice cartons (no foil liner)
  • Waxed cardboard and paper 
  • Wine corks

  • I like the idea of recycling and composting. One of the items that was not discussed was cooking fats and cooking oils. The closest this was addressed was “greasy pizza boxes”. If anyone has every fried bacon, roasted a turkey/chicken in the oven, or done any sort of deep frying, they will have left over fats and cooking oils. These cannot and should not be poured down the drain!
    So, how should I prepare these fats and oils for your people to pickup. Please do not tell me to soak cardboard with it so that it qualifies as “greasy pizza boxes” or to deliver it some place else.

    Science experiment: Take some meat scraps, cheese, what have you. Throw them on the old compost pile. Give it a week.

  • Just emptied my green pail. Even though I line it with paper, various food scraps still get onto the inside of the green pail. 🙁 I do NOT like my green pail for two reasons:

    1. You need three hands to empty the green pail. One hand holds open the compost bin and the other two hands are needed to hold the handle and cover out of the way of the falling food scraps. Since I, and most people, do not have three hands, I need to prop the compost bin lid up with my shoulder or head. In this position, do not even think about tapping the green pail against the inside of the compost bin. Opening the compost bin lid all the way does not work too well if the hinge is against a wall or fence; i.e., it just balances in a vertical position ready to fall and knock the green pail to the bottom of the bin where it is impossible to reach unless you are eight feet tall and can touch your toes.

    2. The next problem with the green pail is cleaning it. It does NOT come apart to make cleaning easier. With dirty water in the bucket, care has to be taken to hold the handle and cover out of the way when emptying the bucket … or else it will splash all over the place.

    Solution: The green pail should be designed so that the cover and handle can be locked together in an open position so that the “open” green pail can be held and emptied with one hand. The green pail should also be designed so that the handle and cover can be easily detached for cleaning.
