Recycle your Christmas tree!

Beginning January 1st, Recology San Mateo County will be happy to pick up your old Christmas tree. (Allied Waste will still be collecting them through the end of the year.)

Once you’ve removed all the tinsel, lights, decorations and stands from your holiday tree, you can leave the tree next to your green Compost Cart, and we will pick it up on your next service day, through January 31.

Please make sure trees are 8 feet tall or less. If it’s taller than 8 feet, cut the tree into lengths of 8 feet or less.

Visit www.RecologySanMateoCounty.com for information on this and many other services we offer!

I can’t get the stand off the tree. What to do?

  • I left my tree out and it was not picked up. I realized it was not exactly next to the compost bin — it was next to the garbage bin. Seems a bit strict.

  • Christmas trees can be used to create a feeding station for birds and other backyard wildlife.

Other options from old Christmas trees include some woodworking skills. Easy do-it-yourself plans exist for turning the trees into everything from walking sticks to coat racks.
